OVERVIEW: The Polk Ranch has incredible history of pioneering from the family that has owned it for over 100 years. Conveniently located in Algerita, Texas is an excellent historic ranch perfectly set up for hunting, fishing, recreations, or agriculture use. There’s something for everyone at Polk Ranch, whether you’re into deer or turkey hunting, bass or catfishing, Indian artifacts, riding horses, or raising cattle, you’ll never run out of activities for you or your family!
History: Known as San Saba County property with history of longest continuous ownership by a single family. Texas settler Headley Polk, a kinsman of 1845-1849 United States President James K. Polk, bought from grantee Burke Trammel in 1849 a section of land a half-mile to the south of this marker. Headley's son, John Robert Polk (1853-1946), grew up in Lockhart and on the San Marcos River at the Mooney Mill, where he made fine furniture. In 1883, "Bob" and his wife Kate Word Polk moved to this property with their herd of cattle. In the early era, Polk trailed his Bar-P cattle to market; for years he belonged to the Texas Trail Drivers' Association. The family built a majestic home in 1925 that has been updated throughout the years and remains in pristine condition. Like most centennial ranches, this one has unique fingerprints of its predecessors, but plenty of room for new memories to be made for years to come.
Location: Polk Ranch is located at HWY 190 and County Road 332, 10 miles west from downtown of the novel town of San Saba, “The Pecan Capital of the World.” An hour and a half from Austin, Texas

Surface Water: This is the star of the show! The ranch features exceptional recreational surface water with over a mile (1.34 +/-) of the enchanting San Saba River! A fisherman’s paradise. If your more adventurous, grab a kayak or tube and float along the scenic route. There’s a multitude of spots available to pitch a tent and listen to the melodic sounds of water babbling and the frogs taking over where the daytime songbirds left off. You will not find a stretch of the San Saba River with more accessible fading banks as you will here on the Polk Ranch. The river also provides reliable water for wildlife.
Wildlife: In terms of wildlife, Polk Ranch has it all. The topography, diverse, and thick cover provides excellent habitat for deer growth and habitat for turkeys and other wildlife.
Productivity: The ranch not only features incredible recreational attributes, but also income producing ones as well. In the rich soil throughout the river bottoms and nestled along the river banks sit numerous mature pecan trees. The open fields in the bottoms provide ample grazing for livestock. An irrigated orchard with 88 pecan trees and 3 walnut trees is planted next to the homestead. The north section of the property is a 65 +/- acre Tifton coastal field for grazing your herd. The field has partial flood irrigation and a tank in the southwest portion of the field. A set of sound working pens make this operation complete.
Topography: The topography is undulating throughout the ranch with significant elevation changes surrounding the creek bottoms and river ridges on the property.
